String Inverter:
In this system, modules are connected as strings wired in series called arrays all facing south direction (orientation) in order to generate uniform voltage to energise the inverter.  Orientation cannot be changed.  All panels forming the array have to be similar.
The central PCU manages connected panels and does string level maximum power point tracking.
Module mismatch, varied tolerance & aging severely affects the performance of the string.
Being a series connection, the system generates high voltage and performance is based on the lowest performing module.
Susceptible to single point failure, i.e. if inverter fails, entire system fails to generate energy.

Microinverter:
In this system, a micro-inverter is connected to each module and is wired in parallel
Each Micro Inverter manages the attached panel, does module level maximum power point tracking and extracts maximum energy.
Each micro inverter and the attached panel functions as an independent system unaffected by the performance of other modules.
These systems generally deliver 20% higher energy generation than string inverter based systems in shade free conditions and in shade conditions the system performance is even higher.
Module level monitoring enables performance risk assessment, warranty management & enforcement.
